Construction of Wightman Fibre to the Home (FTTH) may be completed, but our job is far from over. We are now connecting homes and business to this new fibre technology. If you haven’t signed up yet because you have questions about FTTH, here are a few frequently asked questions to help you in making the switch:

Q. What is Fibre to the Home?
A. Fibre to the Home uses glass fibre to carry communications signals. It replaces existing copper infrastructure, such as telephone wires and TV cable, with a faster, more reliable method of delivering internet, TV, and phone services.

Q. Why is fibre better than copper lines, or wireless service?
A. It can manage significantly faster internet speeds over greater distances, and it is not subject to transmission interference like copper, coaxial cable, and wireless. Fibre optics offers more transmission security, requires less maintenance, and has a significantly longer lifespan than other technologies.

Q. Is there any cost to me for Fibre to the Home installation?
A. No. Fibre to the Home installation is free if you subscribe to our service during the initial construction period.

Q. How do I know if my address will get fibre?
A. Stop in and see us, give us a call, or send an email and we can confirm for you.

April 29, 2021

Land  clean-up required as a result of the construction will be completed by a professional team, AVERTEX Utility Solutions Inc. At this time of year our crews will be working on lawn restoration as ground conditions permit and dry topsoil becomes available. If you have concerns about the installation or clean-up after construction, please contact AVERTEX at 1-226-383-3060.

Our crew and contractors are working in the neighbourhood of Preston Street. The construction of our Point of Presence (POP) in town is now complete and we will begin connecting the Town of Arthur with our fibre network.

If you live in Arthur and haven’t signed up for Wightman Fibre to the Home, now’s the time! We won’t automatically bring fibre to your location, so it’s important that homes and businesses sign up now so we don’t miss you while construction is happening.

We had someone from Arthur ask a great question last week, “Do you have to complete all construction before you can do customer connections or is that done as you go?”

Answer: No, we don’t need to complete all construction before we begin connecting customers, however we do need to complete the construction to our Point of Presence in town. This work is currently underway, and we are hoping to have it completed early next Spring.

Our construction crews are currently working along Smith Street, and Fredrick Street West with locates called for Charles Street, and Wellington Rd 12 (north of 18th line).

Last week, the question was asked, “What are all the conduits for in the ground, are they all for Wightman Fibre?” What a great question!
Answer: The smaller conduits are for the individual fibres that will go to each home. The larger conduits are for various fibre lines that each contain hundreds of fibres necessary to make the connections to each home. Our plans include anticipation that every home and business will be connected to Wightman Fibre, and we also have capacity for growth beyond what is necessary today. The different colours of the conduits help the installation crews easily identify what goes where.

Our construction crews are currently working along Sideroad 17, 18th Line, and Sideroad 12. Locates have been called for Conestoga Street, Clarke Street, Tucker Street, and Walton Street, as well as Wellington Road 12, and in the next couple of weeks you are likely to see us in these areas.
